On Saturday afternoon, children from different schools of Mumbai visited the Times of India press in Kandivli to get a glimpse of processes involved in printing a newspaper as part of the Mumbai for Kids initiative.
As children entered, they learnt their first lesson of the workshop. A poster re ad A full grown tree produces 18 kg of oxygen and a person needs 3 kg oxygen in a day , so one tree gives oxygen to six people daily .
A group of 60 students, accompanied with their parents, learnt the ways of how a printing press works.
Employees at the press took the children through the entire process of what the press actually does.They were explained the va rious stages of printing, the colors are used, types of papers used for printing, the metal plates used. As the ses sion progressed, there were a bunch of questions in the minds of the children which were addressed. The children were also shown the printing machine and its function, different types of printing stations where inventory was stored, colours were made and the DTP machine.
“I have never seen such a big printing machine. It is really huge and interesting.I thoroughly enjoyed this session,“ said Omkar Tiwari, a student.
The session also gave budding journalists a chance to look behind what does into a newspaper. “My dream is to become a journalist and this knowledge will help me in future .I learnt about secondary and primary colours and came across many things which we have not been taught in school,“ said Kairavi Chauhan, a student.
